In the Federal Capital Territory’s High Court, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has brought a new case against Godwin Emefiele, the troubled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Emefiele was charged by the EFCC with authorizing the printing of N684,590,000, or N18.96 billion. The EFCC said that Emefiele violated the law with the intention of hurting the people while he was implementing the naira swap program of the former President Muhammadu Buhari government in the charge sheets seen by PUNCH Online on Tuesday.
The anti-graft agency also accused Emefiele of forging an illegal authorization to withdraw N124.8 billion from the Federation’s Consolidated Revenue Fund. With the case number CR/264/2024, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the head prosecutor for the EFCC, submitted a document on April 2, 2024. It said that Emefiele will face four further charges before Judge Hamza Muazu, including money printing without authorization, misusing one’s position, and breaching the law to penalize Nigerians.
